In January, Israeli agtech start-up Vertical Field signed an agreement with Emirates Smart Solutions & Technologies to set up pilot vertical farms in the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain ahead of a wider roll-out in the UAE, its vertical farming system designed to lessen food insecurity. In cybersecurity, this past April, a former Mossad chief, retired army generals and leading CEOs were invited to speak at the Cybertech Global conference in Dubai. The conference covered trends, challenges and solutions in the world of cyber, and the Israeli participants’ attendance highlighted the deepening ties between the two countries. The anniversary of the Abraham Accords coincides with the rapidly-evolving global conversation regarding climate change and its impacts on health, stability and prosperity.October saw the opening of Dubai Expo 2020,with its focus on sustainability, and an Israeli pavilion is present at a major fair on Arab soil, for the first time. At the Dubai Expo, there were a number of agreements being signed, among them a historic space exploration and cooperation agreement between Israel’s Minister of Science, Orit Farkash, and her UAE counterpart, Sarah Al Amri, Minister of State for Advanced Technology. The Dubai Expo is to be followed in October by the UN Climate Change Conference, COP 26, in Glasgow, Scotland. The international community is facing a core dilemma- how to promote an accelerated post-COVID economic recovery that advances, rather than undermines, sustainable development goals. The solution to this dilemma is green innovation. Israel and the UAE are already leaders in this field and can have dramatic impact.
